News › Man Charged in Motorcycle Death
A motorcyclist has been charged with manslaughter in the death of 19-year-old Melinda Quijano, who was a passenger on a motorcycle that crashed April 6 on Trans Mountain Road.

Pedro Nino, 21, of the 3600 block of Tierra Alba, was released Wednesday from jail on $20,000 bail after his arrest on Tuesday by El Paso police, jail logs showed. Nino could not be reached for comment.

Nino was "reckless" traveling at an "excessive speed" on a Suzuki GSXR 600 west on the mountain road when he lost control at a curve and drove onto the dirt median, causing Nino and Quijano to get thrown off the bike, El Paso police spokesman Officer Chris Mears said. Quijano died at a hospital from her injuries.

Quijano's family said that Nino must be held accountable in what has been a painful loss.

"This was an act of clear negligence," said Quijano's uncle Tony Moreno.

Quijano was one of three children and the only daughter of Sebastian and Margie Quijano.

Nino "is not fully aware of the great pain he has caused," Margie Quijano said. "He had a big impact on our family.

The family will never see her graduate. Her father will never dance with her on her wedding day. We will never see grandchildren from her."

Quijano's father, Sebastian Quijano, began crying as he spoke about his daughter. "I feel I've been cheated out of something very special," he said. "My life is different now."
