News › 2 Dead After Arizona Crash During Laughlin Motorcycle Rally
Two motorcyclists were killed in an Arizona crash during an annual motorcycle rally that drew more than 60,000 people to the southern Nevada resort town of Laughlin, authorities said Monday.

Victor Guy Mattice, 61, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., died after his Harley-Davidson motorcycle crossed the center line of a highway and crashed into another motorcyclist Saturday morning outside Bullhead City, Mohave County sheriff's spokeswoman Trish Cotter said.

The other rider, Larry Duane Faccio, 48, of Hereford, Ariz., died Sunday of his injuries at a hospital in Las Vegas, Cotter said.

A passenger on Mattice's motorcycle, Theresa Smith, 51, of Lake Havasu City, remained hospitalized Monday in serious condition at a Las Vegas hospital, Cotter said.

Las Vegas police said 60,000 to 65,000 motorcycle enthusiasts attended the 26th annual Laughlin River Run motorcycle rally, which had a smaller crowd and fewer arrests than last year.

Police reported 46 arrests during the four-day event, fewer than half the 93 arrests made during the 2007 rally, which drew more than 70,000 people.

Officer Jose Montoya, a Las Vegas police spokesman, said 524 traffic citations were issued this year in the Laughlin and Searchlight areas. Eight juveniles were arrested or ticketed for violating a 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew on people under 18.

Last year police issued about 600 traffic citations, mostly for speeding. An additional 51 tickets were given to juveniles in 2007.

Officials had prepared for as many as 75,000 people to attend this year's event, about 100 miles south of Las Vegas. It is billed as one of the largest motorcycle rallies in the nation.

Along with bikers from throughout the West, the rally draws police from Nevada, Arizona and California who keep an eye on revelry along the main drag.

Police have imposed vehicle checkpoints and closely monitored the rally since three people were killed and more than a dozen were injured in a 2002 brawl and shoot-out between Hells Angels and rival Mongols motorcycle gang members at the Harrah's Laughlin casino.
