News › Bikes & Blues Rendezvous: a Roaring Beginning
Downtown thundered Friday evening as caravan after caravan of bikers rolled in to the first-ever Berdoo Bikes & Blues Rendezvous.

"It's just filling up as we speak," said Gilbert Martus, 50, of Corona. He stood next to his silver and black Harley Davidson Heritage Softtail on Arrowhead Avenue while others arriving to Bikes & Blues rode by.

"I enjoy just looking at all the custom bikes," he said.

Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson chronicled San Bernardino's ties to the outlaw side of motorcycle culture in his book "Hell's Angels," but the new festival was shaping up as a family-friendly event.

Martus carried his 3-year-old grandson Artie as they checked out a long line of Harley Davidsons (with the occasional Triumph or Indian thrown in). Several children sat on bales of hay and listened to live music or took in the sights with their parents as the event got started.

Motorcyclists lined up their bikes along Arrowhead at Third Street after arriving at the Rendezvous. After parking, it was time to get an eyeful of others' motorcycles.

"Nice turnout," said Ron Robinson, 35 of Corona. "A lot of different types and styles of bikes. It's good."

The downtown air filled with the smells of gasoline exhaust, barbecue sauce and grilled sausages during the event's first hour. Musicians on two stages provided the blues and other sounds.

The night's first acts included Latin Society and the electric blues-infused J.D. Priest.

The Berdoo Bikes and Blues Rendezvous is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today in the downtown area centered around Third and Arrowhead. Admission is $5 per person.

Some of the proceeds will go to the Edward G. Hirschman Burn Center at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, the county hospital in Colton.
