Helmet Law Would be Another Lost Freedom Wednesday, January 09, 2008 (17:00:06)

Joseph Terkelson of Mt. Pleasant, Utah write in opposition of a helmet mandate.
I'd like to respond to the Dec. 30 news story, "Wife Would Like to See Utah Broaden Helmet Law"
It seems there's another attempt to legislate a mandatory helmet law. There's currently no law requiring a helmet while riding a motorcycle. I wear mine, but I'm opposed to legislation for a helmet law. We're losing our freedoms because of too many laws mandated by our government that are drafted "for our own good," because people can't think for themselves.
As stated, I'm not against wearing a helmet because common sense dictates everyone should wear one during any activity that could lead to a head injury. Why isn't there a cry to mandate wearing a helmet during skiing?
I think adults should make decisions affecting them without intrusion from government, as long as it doesn't interfere with others' rights. Charles Trentelman, in his Jan. 3 column ("The cascading cost of one bad choice is paid by us all"), has a valid point: When a rider is injured it affects more than just his/her family, but it's too much to predict end-of-the-world, skyrocketing insurance premiums, along with higher taxes for Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Just as much money could be lost if someone doesn't wear a seat belt.
I may not be alone in believing government has a tendency to "usurp power." I hope when the Legislature meets this year, its members work hard to preserve our rights, not restrict them. |
