The Wichita Falls Police Department has another group to be proud of tonight. The WFPD Motorcycle Unit took home top honors and had an outstanding finish at a nationwide training\competition in Las Vegas.

After competing in the 12th Annual Southwest Police Motorcycle Training and Competition officers walked away with numerous awards. Officer's took five places in the top ten of the "Individual Competition" to include 1st (Officer Dwain Powell), 2nd (Officer Mark Wise), and 3rd place (Officer Justin Whisenhunt). They also took 1st and 2nd place in the "Team Ride Competition." The 1st place team consisted of Officer Powell, Officer Wise, Officer Whisenhunt, and SGT David Stout. The 2nd place team consisted of Officer Jerad Miller, Officer Brad Sanchez, Officer Marc Montana, and SGT Mike Yonts.

"Every motorcycle competition we have competed in, we either won or had people place right there at the top. This speaks highly of their skills. Year after year they still maintain a high level of skill." said WFPD Lt. Brad Hardin.

And this reputation is something Officer Dwain Powell is proud to be a part of.

"This unit here in Wichita Falls is known from the East coast to the West coast for the way they ride and train here. I've been here 19 years, and I heard of them before I even started being a police officer." said Powell.

But all of this talent goes beyond competition. Lt. Hardin said basically this whole thing is to improve skills as a motorcycle officer. It's done not only to keep them safe but also to keep the public safe. But the recognition is well deserved.

"When your known nation wide just about, that's just something to be proud of" said Powell.

If the awards weren't enough, one of the judges from Canada sent an e-mail commending our officers for their skills and how well they represented the City of Wichita Falls. The competition was also a fund-raiser for the Special Olympics in Nevada.

Officer Powell said over $ 20,000 was raised.
