Helmet Bill Just Doesn’t Make Sense Sunday, May 04, 2008 (00:57:12)

Darryl Wagley of Louisiana slams helmet mandate repeal.
Now let me see if I understand this correctly.
I drive a vehicle that has four wheels, four sides and a top but I am told that I have to wear a seat belt or I will receive a ticket for a violation. I really don’t mind because I think it is a safety issue.
I will soon be told that I can’t use my cell phone while I’m driving my four-wheeled vehicle with four sides and a top. There will be some inconvenience, but I can handle this. It probably really is a safety issue.
I can’t smoke in certain places (restaurants, public buildings). I have been told that I have to refrain from smoking or I will receive a ticket for a violation. I really don’t mind because I think it is a health issue.
Now let me see if I understand this correctly. If state Sen. Eric Lafleur is successful with any of his bills, I will soon be able to ride my motorcycle, which has two wheels and no sides or top, without a helmet if I want to do so.
According to the proposed bills, if I’m older than 17 or 21, depending on which bill you read, I will have a choice. On top of this, I understand Gov. Bobby Jindal supports this "freedom of choice" bill.
I’m 72 years old and don’t have a choice in the other health and safety issues, and that’s fine with me because they make sense. Incidentally, I don’t own a motorcycle, but if I did, I would certainly want the added protection of a helmet.
I have the highest regard for Lafleur and Jindal. Maybe one of them could explain the rationale for their decision to pursue this dangerous idea. Then maybe I could understand it better. |
